The Chelsea Awards 2022

Hundreds of nominations for the Chelsea Awards were made by all corners of the community, with the winners again decided by a panel of independent judges representing different parts of Chelsea: Councillor Gerard Hargreaves, The Mayor of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea; Avis Hawkins, Headteacher at Christ Church and Holy Trinity Schools, Chelsea; Anya Hindmarch CBA, globally recognised business woman; Councillor Alison Jackson, BAFTA Award winning artist; Victoria Steward Todd, Director the K+C Foundation and Hugh Seaborn, CEO of Cadogan.

Hugh Seaborn, CEO at Cadogan comments, “A vibrant local community has never been more important and despite the challenges and loss we have experienced, it is a privilege to have seen such resilience and desire to help one another make a positive difference.”

2022 WINNERS

Master of Craft – an Artisan who elevates the everyday to the extraordinary

Shortlist: Daniela de Montby, Designers Guild, Theo Fennell

Winner: DESIGNERS GUILD. The judges said: ‘Designers Guild has been a Chelsea institution for over 50 years and has grown into a company of international renown and prestige. Tricia Guild has changed the way people over the world view colour and decorate their homes.’

Future Forward – a company innovating to meet tomorrow’s challenges

Shortlist: Dr Rhona Eskander for PÄRLA toothpaste tablets, Anya Hindmarch, Holy Carrot

Winner: Dr Rhona Eskander for PÄRLA toothpaste tablets. The judges said: ‘PÄRLA is a sustainable range of plastic-free, oral care products designed by dentists, including Dr Rhona Eskander, owner of the Chelsea Dental Clinic. A ground-breaking, eco-friendly, alternative to traditional toothpaste.’

Cultural Champion – an organisation or person that has enriched Chelsea’s culture

Shortlist: The National Army Musuem, The Royal Horticultural Society for the Chelsea Flower Show, Oliver Lallemant and the Sloane Square Choral Society

Winner: THE ROYAL HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY FOR THE CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW. The judges said: ‘Held in Chelsea since 1912, the world’s greatest flower show draws 157,000 visitors every year leading to an explosion of vibrancy throughout Chelsea and attracts attention the world over.’

Community Collaboration – businesses who have joined forces for the greater good

Shortlist: Kensington and Chelsea Art Week, The King’s Road Partnership, Nucleus Legal Advice Centre

Winner: THE KING’S ROAD PARTNERSHIP. The judges said: ‘The Partnership brought together the largest local property owners and businesses to boost the profile and environment of the King’s Road. This has resulted in the successful formation of the King’s Road BID, which will give occupiers a tangible say in the way the area develops of the next five years.’

Only in Chelsea – a business that brings something unique to the area

Shortlist: Haines of Sloane Square, Jacques Flower Shop, The Royal Hospital Chelsea

Winner: HAINES OF SLOANE SQUARE. The judges said: ‘London’s oldest news kiosk, run by same family since 1892, now part of the fabric of Sloane Square that continued to serve the community through the Covid crisis.’

Community Hero – an organisation or person that has benefitted the community through their actions

Shortlist: Reverend Prebendary Dr Brian Leathard, Rob McGibbon, the St Giles Trust

Winner: REVEREND PREBENDARY DR BRIAN LEATHARD. The judges said: ‘Reverend Brian Leathard is familiar in the community as rector of St Luke’s and Christ Church. As well as his day job, he is kept busy with school governing boards, engagement with local residents and associations and as the tireless chairman of local charity Glass Door, which operates London’s largest emergency winter night shelters and providing a refuge for thousands of homeless people each year.’

In Good Taste – someone who has made Chelsea delicious

Shortlist: The Cadogan Arms, Finns of Chelsea, Peggy Porschen

Winner: PEGGY PORSCHEN. The judges said: ‘A 100% family-owned business, with husband and wife team, Bryn and Peggy at the helm, the Parlour’s pastel pink café radiates passion, creativity and a world-class cake selection.’

Compassion in the Crisis – an organisation or person that has adapted and served the community during the pandemic

Shortlist: The Fashion School, K+C Christmas Collective, Restart Lives

Winner: THE K+C CHRISTMAS COLLECTIVE. The judges said: ‘The K+C Christmas Collective delivered food and gifts to over 8,000 vulnerable neighbours last Christmas. The Collective consists of these local organisations: Age UK, Dalgarno Trust, Kensington and Chelsea Foundation and SMART – plus a whole host of caring individuals.’
